On Sunday, October 6, 2024 at Frankie's Jazz Club, my quartet with Thad Bailey-Mai on trumpet, Jonny Tobin on piano, and Todd Stewart on drums will play the music of my first album Aim to Stay at Frankie's Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver.

Cory Weeds booked us for this evening. It’s not only my first show with this lineup (trumpet-piano-bass-drums) since releasing the album back in 2020: I'm also making a super-rare appearance on upright bass. Don’t miss it!

Learn about the band:

Bassist and composer William Chernoff’s quartet draws influence from the sensitive sounds of ECM Records, but Will's music keeps strong roots in the swinging jazz tradition. Born and raised in New Westminster, BC, Will released his debut album Aim to Stay in 2020 with critics observing the influence of guitarist Bill Frisell. On Maybe Eventually, released in 2022, jazz journalist Chris Wong writes that "swing and melodicism" are "at Chernoff's artistic core".

Thad Bailey-Mai is a rising trumpeter, "part of the new breed: highly literate in complex music, flush with thoughtful ideas" (Rhythm Changes). Thad has earned recent renown as a composer-leader of his own quartet, as well as for his contributions to the David Blake album Fun House (Cellar Music) and Dean Thiessen's Stranger Friends ensemble.

Jonny Tobin is a GRAMMY-nonimated keyboardist and producer whose solo work defines the modern style of jazztronica. Jonny’s work has spanned an eclectic variety of worlds from releasing his own original music, to collaborating with artists from all over the world, to producing beats or playing keys as a session musician, to composing music for film, TV, and video games.

Drummer Todd Stewart's tasteful interpretation of both bebop and contemporary drumming brings out expressive characteristics of any tune. His orchestrations and his appreciation of the melody drive his concept. In Vancouver jazz, he is perhaps best known for his collaborations with Feven Kidane, Brad Turner, Chris Fraser, and many more of the scene's most active bandleaders.
